Wuratrem Biodiversity Conservation Project
Wuratrem Biodiversity Conservation Project
The Wuratrem Sacred Grove is a closed forest of about 20 km2 in the Wassa Amenfi District of the Western Region of Ghana. It has been protected by the Traditional Authorities since time immemorial using traditional norms and taboos. However, with the erosion of the traditional values, the grove has come under threat of encroachment, degradation and bushfires. To date, the grove still holds lots of biodiversity particularly large timber trees. The aim of the project is to build the capacity of the community members in natural resource conservation and to sustainably manage the grove. Through a practice of a mix of sustainable agriculture and improved income ventures, the project aims to reduce the threats to the grove. The project will also promote the creation of corridors to link up the grove to nearby statutory forest reserves such as Bura River Forest Reserve and Ngoben Shelterbelt Forest Reserve. The NGO has based itself in the community and training them in sustainable permaculture agriculture, agroforestry and the incorporation of livestock in there farming system.
