Kelana Jaya Lakes Rehabilitation Programme: Community Awareness and Participation in Conservation of Freshwater Ecosystem and its Biodiversity
The project will build a partnership among NGOs, local government, local communities and the private sector in the Kelana Jaya area of Petaling Jaya in Selangor to rehabilitate several polluted lakes and improve their biodiversity. The main objectives of the project are to: promote the rehabilitation of the Kelana Jaya lakes ecosystem and its associated biodiversity; enhance the involvement of local communities in environmental monitoring activities and rehabilitation of the Kelana Jaya lakes ecosystem; and build up the capacity of government agencies, NGOs and local communities to work together in smart partnership for the protection and management of freshwater resources.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
As part of the project, mechanisms will be developed to generate resources to support the management of the park surrounding the Kelana Jaya Lakes and provide sustainable livelihoods for those members of the community who are interested in providing recreational activities at the lakes. Examples of such mechanisms include user-pay fees for facilities or activities such as boating or fishing, etc.
Gender Focus
Consultations and activities will include men and women of local communities around the Kelana Jaya locality. Activities will be tailored to meet their specific needs and requirements accordingly, so as to yield maximum benefits to the particpating local communities in line with the objectives of the project.
