The local population of two countries (Kyrghyz and Tadjik), including the schoolchildren participates in: inventory of sources of pollution of waters Isfana river within the limits of cities; liquidations or reduction of sources of pollution (prohibition or penalties for vehicles passing by the river plane , for household wastes in the river plane); rehabitation of treatment sets for public objects ; organization of local monitoring (hydrobiology, vegetation, fauna, parameters of water quality (colour, smell)
The local system of monitoring will cause change of habits and traditions, that in its turn will result in increase of quality of life conditions, reduction of sickness rates, increase of life expectancy
Capacity - Building Component
The population and executive NGO acquire new skills in environment monitoring.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project is realized in near border area and the population by own real experience receives representation that the consequences of negative economic activity have transboundary character and the reduction of pollution on a global scale should be begun from reduction of pollution in own places.
Gender Focus
There is no obviously expressed gender approach in the project , but women are more often dealing with water (washing, preparation of food) than the men therefore, the improvement of quality of water first of all will have an effect on health of the women.
Project Results
Potential global benefits of the project
Thanks to the project the water pollution in transboundary Isfana river basin was reduced. It was achieved due to: rehabilitation of a sewerage system, monitoring of ecosystem and notification, training of the local Tajik and Kyrgyz population, introduction of new system of the payment for maintenance of the sewerage system.
Link the practice of sustainable livelihoods to a GEF focal area
Project was directed on demonstration that local system of monitoring will cause change of habits and traditions that in its turn will result in increase of quality of life conditions, reduction of sickness rates, and increase of life expectancy.
Community driveness of the project
The local population of two countries (Kyrghyz and Tadjik), including the schoolchildren participates in: inventory of sources of pollution of waters Isfana river within the limits of cities; liquidations or reduction of sources of pollution (prohibition or penalties for vehicles passing by the river plane , for household wastes in the river plane); rehabilitation of treatment sets for public objects ; organization of local monitoring (hydrobiology, vegetation, fauna, parameters of water quality (color, smell)
Capacity ?building component
The population and executive NGO acquire new skills in environment monitoring and raised the level of knowledge about interrelation between economic activity and water clearance. The level of knowledge about local flora and fauna rose as well.
Gender focus
There is no obviously expressed gender approach in the project, but women are more often dealing with water (washing, preparation of food) than the men therefore, the improvement of quality of water first of all will have an effect on health of the women.
Co-financing received
Co-financing from Public Foundation ?Bilek? in kind is 679$.
The main kinds of co-finance were labor on: inventory of sources of pollution of waters Isfana River within the limits of cities; liquidations or reduction of sources of pollution (prohibition or penalties for vehicles passing by the river plane, for household wastes in the river plane.
Replication in other communities or regions
This project is appropriate for replicating in analogous geographic conditions countries (in near border area). There are no plans on up-scaling the project to a medium-sized GEF.
Links between this project and the overall GEF
Links between this project and the overall GEF follows from public awareness on global environment problems, their direct involvement to the decreasing of water pollution in transboundary Isfana river basin.
Influence on government policy
There is no obvious influence on government policy on National level but the decision on joint monitoring of local environment situation by local authority and PA members is illustration of project influence on the local level.
Benefits achieved for/ by participants during implementation
Thanks to the project the water pollution in transboundary Isfana river basin was reduced. It was achieved due to: rehabilitation of a sewerage system, monitoring of ecosystem and notification, training of the local Tajik and Kyrgyz population, introduction of new system of the payment for maintenance of the sewerage system.
The local population agrees to stop economic activity, which strengthens water polluting of Isfana river
The actions under the project will result not only in water polluting risk reduction , but also in preservation of flora and fauna of Isfana River, that will be the direct contribution to preservation of global biodiversity will be emphasized at seminars and other advocacy actions
Products/services generated by the project
sewerage system of microdistrict #1 and local hospital were repaired
inventory of components of Isfana River ecosystems
developed database on biocommunity of given area
publishing 100 pieces of analytic report on project implementations for rising public awareness on environment problems and propagating knowledge about native area
Assessment of impact of project in the GEF focal area
Project corresponds to Operational Program 8 GEF/SGP ?Waterbody-Based ? and provides biodiversity preservation through defining species composition of flora and fauna, aquatic environment of this area
Policy influence
There is decision of Public Foundation ?Bilek? and local authority on joint monitoring of ecosystem of Isfana river basin.
