Churiya Bio-diversity Conservation Planning Project
Churiya Bio-diversity Conservation Planning Project
Churiya hill is one of the youngest and fragile landscapes in Nepal. It lies in the confluence of mid hill and the Terai; and runs from east to west through out Nepal. Steep land slopes with diverse flora and fauna, intermittent gorges, large spans of river and temporary seasonal streams are the characteristics of the landforms.

The recent IUCN publication "Conservation Status-Churiya Area of Ilam District" showed that this area is rich in NTFPs and also pointed out these resources are over used. In the recent years the Churiya has come under tremendous pressure of encroachment. Gradual migrations from the mid hills coupled with the displacement of Bhutanese refugees into Jhapa have depleted natural resources at an alarming rate pressures on the area. On the other hand natural calamities such as monsoon flood, flash flood, debris flow, landslides, river cutting and fire are equally significant factors in the degradation of the Churiya landscape.

The project is aimed to prepare detailed proposal with the support from Namsaling Community Development Centre (NCDC), local line agencies and people living in and around the area of Ilam district.

Comprehensive Churiya Bio-divesity Conservation Proposal along with the baseline scenario of the project area has been prepared
