Community based constructed wetland to clean waste water from Egerton University.
The Egerton University turns out 500,000 liters of waste water daily. This project will involve the university community, the local community in the surrounding areas to construct a vegetation based wetland to treat 100,000 liters of the waste water from the Egerton University. This project will assist in cleaning river Njoro, which is the main river that flows into lake Nakuru, A ramsar site of international importance. Polutting Lake Nakuru has greatly affected the biodivesity in lake Nakuru. This project will serve as an example for the community to ask other industrial companies and factories around Lake Nakuru to also clean up their waste water. A private consulting firm Tara cunsultants are providing the technical knowhow about the design and plants to be used. This project brings together those in academia, private sector, NGos and communties in learning about constructed wetlands for cleaning waste water.

Gender Focus
Both men and women from the university and from the surrounding community are involved in the learning and implemenation of the project. If River Njoro is cleaned up, women will especilly benefit in that they will not have to go to extra lengths to purify the water for domestic needs.
Capacity - Building Component
Capacity is being built into the local NGO, Maji na Ufanisi to acquire skills in using constructed wetlands in waste water management. Msc and Phd students from the university have also been attached to the project to learn
