Preventing Solid Waste Dumping in Imenti Forest, Meru
Meru is a fast growing town, located close to the eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya, one of the five water catchments of the country. The Meru Municipal Council has been dumping solid waste generated within the municipality in the Imenti Forest of Mt. Kenya National Reserve. The garbage dumping has been going on for over 20 years. In this project, Meru Mbeere Embu Tharaka Women Managers (MMET), a local CBO, will work with the Meru Municipal Council to identify a suitable dump site with the view to relocate the current garbage dump site from the forest and restore the ecological integrity of the forest. Other secondary activities include promoting awareness among the Meru residents on better management of waste at household level, e.g. recycling and composting.
