Cockrane Eco Village Transformation Project

A six phase project aimed at the transformation of the village of Cockrane into an Eco Village in order to increase awareness of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park World Heritage Site biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods, while enabling the villagers to enjoy an improved standard of living by encouraging visitors to the community.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

As a result of the project success CVIC was invited to do a presentation on "Community Tourism Best Practices" at Community Tourism Workshop organized by the Programme Management Unit of the Eco Tourism Development Programme of the Ministry of Tourism CVIC also invited by OECS ESDU to do a presentation in St. Lucia on the Cockran's experience

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

CVIC has organized two Rabbit Festivals which brings much income to the community of Cockrane. Activities include rabbit racing, raffles, live rabbit exhibitions, sale of meals with rabbit meat prepared in different ways, sale of farm produce, bat tours, etc

Notable Community Participation

Hih community participation and mobilization was instrumental in the success of the project. For example the entire community participated in the tidy Village Project, solid waste management , Farmers participated in the Livestock Small stock component.

Needs of both men and women in the community were addressed. oth men and women participated in the taining activities CVIC (management Committee) gender balanced

strong focus on sustainable livelihoods- tour guide training led to certification which allows for fees to be charged for tours conducted Rabbit farmers presently enjoy the benefits of increased national demands for rabbit meat which previously was practically non existant Women trained in sewing can presently subsidize their income by the funds generated for the newly adquired sewing skills. Community can now boast of having a competent seamstress

Project Results

Increased Number of rabbit farmers.
Purchase and installation of green house has led to increase availability of vegeta sedlings for farmers.
Increase back yard gardening and livestock rearing resulting in increase production of organic vegetables rabbit meat for local consumption leading to improved national food security and decrease in food import bill.
Heightened awareness of organic farming in the comunity.
Heightened awareness of solid waste management issues in the community.
Increased in village earnings from sale of vegetables and rabbit meat.

Improved trail access to Middleham falls.
10 minute DVD promoting Cockrane Village as an Eco Village.

Newly formed partnership betweem CVIC and Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation leading to collection and disposal of village waste by the latter.
The formation and Strengthening of the Dominica Rabbit Breeders Association .

Community children trained in Steel band music as part of project DMA/UNF/02/04.
