Rehabilitation and protection of relic walnut forest ecosystem, in the landslide risk plot in Kugart river basin located on South Western slope of Fergana Range by fencing, planting fruit trees and organization open air cage for mountain partridges and pheasants.
The project territory is exposed to strong antropogenic load because of close location to coal mines of Kokjangak town and relative proximity (38km) to Jalalabat city. It has an effect on previous natural ecosystem of walnut forests and on landslide process.
The main idea of the project is rehabilitation of inhabitants of endemic and included into Red Book species of flora and fauna which are components of natural walnut forests.
In the course of project implementation it is intended obtaining of the following results:
Ecological
-conservation and reproduction of species of plants included into Red Data Book of Kyrgyzstan, part of which are endemics;
-prevention of occurrence of erosion processes;
-rehabilitation of the natural soil fertility and improving their state including increase of absorption capacity at the expense of strengthening of humus formation process;
-rehabilitation of sustainable natural forest-meadow ecosystem;
Economic
-collection of fruits of wild fruit-trees as a source of additional income;
-complex use of forest-meadow ecosystem (collection of fruits and medicine plants, haymaking, use of wood of fast-growing trees) as an alternative to narrow, destroying ecosystem cattle-breeding use of land;
- it is possible that there might be changes in the structure of the housekeeping directed at diversity of income sources
Social and cultural
- it is possible that understanding will improve that cattle-breeding in the existing kind that exists now causes land degradation and next generations will be forced to leave the village because of landslide danger;
-it is possible that understanding will appear that rehabilitation of natural meadow-forest vegetation and its competent use is the only way of carrying on management in this area.
-appearance of preconditions on changing merely consumer attitude towards natural resources to a competent use and reproduction.
Main actions to be undertaken by Public Ecological Foundation «TOLESFOR»
? Fencing and protection of 200 hectares of territory
? Plantation saplings of walmut, almond, pistachio, wild apple on the total area of 30 hectares
? Consnruction of open air cage (15mX8 m) for mountain partridges and pheasants.
? Information and explanatory campaign among population and familirs who used this plot before as a pasture
8 families of Safarovka village, members of PF ?Tolesfor?, students and lecturers of Jalalabat State University will be involved in the project implementation.
The main project activity will take place in the south side of Kokjangak town which are in the 40km distance on south-west from State Forest Zakaznik ?Karaalma?.
The main expected ecological and economic benefits of the project are:
? Rehabilitation of forest-meadow vegetations contented rare and disappearance species included into Red Book of Kyrgyzstan
? Appearance of alternative to cattle-breeding economic activity

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Plantations of nuts and nursery of wild birds (nuts, the eggs, decorative plumes) will generate the additional income, which can be equal to the income from cattle breeding that in next turn, will allow reducing quantity of cattle - one of the main reasons of nut forest reduction.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The fact that the actions under the project will result not only in landslide risk reduction or additional income but also in preservation of species included in the Red Book that will be the direct contribution to preservation of a global biodiversity will be emphasized at seminars and other advocacy actions.
