1) Fishermen received practical training in data collection methods that were used to establish Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve Reserve (BCMR) management zones.

2) A Baseline description of more than 20 commercial species distribution during the course of the 10 month survey period with respect to habitat within BCMR was produced.

3) Data Analysis suggested that species in general more concentrated in southern than northern section of MPA and that shift of zones may provide better protection for most indicator species selected

4) Findings from this project were presented by the Green Reef Environmental Institute at the first ever COMPACT National Forum held in Sarteneja Village, Corozal District in December 2003 and at two single-project workshops (San Pedro and Belize City). The target groups for these workshops were fishermen from the Caribeña Producers Cooperative Ltd and the other fishing cooperatives in Belize.

Some of the main recommendations that came out of the workshops were to:
? Increase enforcement against illegal poachers from Mexico,
? Move the preservation zone in BCMR to the middle of the reserve and put a general use area on the Mexican border,
? More enforcement is needed for fishers, restaurants, and hotels involved in the conch and lobster industries. There was great concern about the status of the conch industry in Belize.
? Fishers felt they needed a greater voice in government and more empowerment to counter the influence of the tourism industry.
? Tour guides felt they needed to be more included in decision making about BCMR and
? In San Pedro, many sportfishers felt the zoning of the Rocky Point spawning aggregation should be changed to allow for fishing.

In addition, the the manager of the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and the Fisheries Department were invited to present the findings of this study at the 57th Annual Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA. Ms. Alicia Eck, the manager of Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and Homero Graniel, a fisherman from San Pedro, attended the symposium.
