Promotion of sustainable development of mountain areas in Africa through increasing awareness of and exchanging knowledge on mountain ecosystems.
The year 2002 was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Mountains (IYM). Since a large portion of tourist activities occurs in mountain areas, the year was also declared the International Year of Eco-tourism so as to forge linkages between Mountain eco-systems and eco-tourism activities. The main objective is to support participation of local actors in the African conference on Mountains and Highland Ecosystems

A policy declaration on the need to conserve mountains in Africa was given. The declaration promoted the sense of conservation for mountain in Africa by all stakeholders.
