Preservation of biodiversity in "Besh Tash" reserve, by planting fruit and quick growing trees and giving ecological education to scholars.

Main ideas of the project is preservation of biodiversity in «Besh-Tash" natural park by plantation (11 hectares) of fast growing and fruit trees nearby close located settlements and increasing of environmental education among children and schoolboys. Three tree nursery will be crated in the school.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

It is supposed that women and children are active participants in the inventory. A women is a leader of implementing NGO.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The cultivation of fast growing and fruit tress will ensure with a economy alternative for local population engaged mainly in cattle breeding and potato cultivation. Fast growing trees allow to redice expences for wood building materials and fuel in long-term prospect.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The fact that the actions under the project will result not only in additional sources of the income of the local population n , but also in reduction of manmade pressure to the nature park ?Besh-Tash?.

Notable Community Participation

The local population and children are the participants of resource inventory of the natural park , support preservation and replenishment of local herbarium and animals album, informs with results of inventory cattle-breeders, arriving to summer pastures of the nature park. The local population takes care for planting by own resources, allocate plots.

Capacity - Building Component

The population gets new skills in sampling nursing. Participation in the inventory raises the level of knowledge about local flora and fauna, interrelation between economic activity and biodiversity conservation. Local implementing NGO gets experience in project realization in the sphere on biodiversity

- People have known about environment problems of given area and endangered species included into Red Book
- Illegal deforestation stopped
- Preservation of habitats of different birds and animals
Products/services generated by the project
- Determined conditions of flora and fauna in National Park ?Besh-Tash? and land inventory was implemented as a result inventory lists (150 pieces) were published
- 21000 saplings of poplar and 2570 of elm were planted on the allocated plot
- Additional incomes for family budget received by planting haricot between beds
- About 100 people participated in trainings on rational using of natural sources without prejudice to flora and fauna of National Park ?Besh-Tash?
- Work meetings and evaluation seminars were organized with local population about 300 inhabitants of buffer zone participated in these actions
- 2 informal shields (about project purpose, NGO executor) were established one at the entrance to National Park ?Besh-Tash? and second on the project realization place
- 8.5 hectares were devised on 12 plots and to choose 12 responsible families for looking after saplings
- The report on project activity was showen on State TV and on Talas oblast TV
Assessment of impact of project in the GEF focal area
Project corresponds to Operational Program 4 GEF/SGP ?Mountain Ecosystems? and provides biodiversity preservation through working out special mechanisms on rational using of natural sources and decreasing of local people dependence from sources of National Park ?Besh-Tash?
Policy influence
Ayil Okmotu allocated 8.5 hectares of land for 10 years. All actions and project results will be expressed in Ayil Okmot?s resolutions.
