A Pilot Project for Community Traffic Management through Promoting Public Transportation Among Schools (Two Pilot Schools- Case of Shahrak-e-Gharb).

The project aims to promote community participation toward an environmentally sustainable transportation plan. A small local community of 2 schools (different gender) has been selected as a pilot. The barriers for using public transportation will be identified and analyzed. A specific and practical model to promote public transportation will be established and extended to 5 schools in Shahrake-Gharb District. A group of students will be trained as ?Urban Environment Pollution Local Watch? to support the project and link the Local NGO with the neighborhood. The awareness of the pilot community with regards to the threats and causes of air pollution and the results of community participation to control it will be elevated through well prepared educational materials, sessions, and workshops based on technical as well as social experiences. Educational brochures and videos will also be prepared to document and disseminate the lessons learned which will be shared through two workshops in two districts.

Notable Community Participation
After training workshops and awarness raising of parents and students, a number of them were prepared to cooperate directly with the program.
Policy Influence
Policy Impact Project team made considerable effort to coordinate beneficiary authorities to arrive in a comprehensive decision. At the final stages of the project each stakeholder even agreed to take part of responsibilities associated with the pattern, however, it did not come to practice during the project lifetime. Fortunately few years after completion of the project, governmental parties came to an agreement and signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate implementing a public transportation system for schools. Main parties include: Ministry of Education, Traffic Police Department, Tehran Municipality and Tehran Taxi Organization. These stakeholders legislated set of regulations such as a unique logo for school service (as shown in the photo), specific qualifications for drivers who are allowed to drive school vehicles, standard inspection regarding to school transportation vehicles, ? are among those regulations and are very close to the suggestions project team identified in participatory meetings with students? parents.
