Orchid Sanctuary/Park in the Monpa Community implemented by Monpa Selvwai Yoeser Tshogpa (MSYT) in Trongsa Dzongkhag to increase people's participation in resource management by creating an orchid sanctuary in Jangbi village for eco-tourism.
In the year 2000, the Monpa Selvwai Yoeser Tshogpa was formed for the execution of the Cane and Bamboo Management Project funded by the Small Grants Programme inorder to revive the age-old monpa handicrafts and regenerate the cane and bamboo resources. At the end of the project, the Monpas proved themselves that they can manage such projects. Therefore, they again approached SGP with the help of the Dzongkhag Administration, Trongsa and the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park (JSWNP).
The rationale of the project was that naturally growing orchid species are also being threatened by the invaders freely and are encroached by people from other villages, geogs and dzongkhags for numerous natural resources. Therefore, it is felt imperative to establish an orchid sanctuary/park which will contribute to conservation of the local orchid species and improve the livelihoods of the community as a tourist site.
The project aims to increase people's participation to protect and conserve the orchid species in their natural conditions. This would in-turn help the in-situ orchid sanctuary or park at Jangbi which would contribute both to the conservation of the local orchid species and improve the livelihoods of the community through eco-tourism.
