Upgrading Glassboat Sector in Aqaba Gulf

The Jordan Royal Ecological Diving Society (JREDS) has been working with the glass boat sector in Aqaba in order to lay the ground for upgrading the sector. To prepare for this phase a ?Pilot Project to Upgrade Glass Boat Sector in Aqaba? will be implemented by JREDS in cooperation with the Glassboaters Association. The project aims at upgrading the capacity of the glassboats, regulating and organizing the sector in Aqaba, in order to improve performance and efficiency thereby improving the levels of income generated by the individual glassboats, which will, in turn, provide an incentive for operators to cooperate in adopting environmentally friendly practices that would lead to safeguarding the local marine environment. Protection of the marine environment is crucial for the long-term sustainability of this sector as glassboats are dependent on healthy coral reefs to show tourists. The project will be implemented in cooperation with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA).

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Improving glass boats and glass boaters understanding of marine environment issues and proper methods of dealing with tourists will increase the demand on glass boat cruises which will in turn contribute to enhancing the livelihood of this sector.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Several public awareness activities will be conducted under this project, these activities will target several sectors including tourists, local community members, students and decision makers.

Notable Community Participation

The NGO conducted a comprehensive study in which the target group of glass boat owners and operators were directly involved, taking their needs and conditions into consideration in planning for the project. Implementation will be carried out in close coordination with the glass boat association which is the community group that represents the target group.

Gender Focus

The project includes a component that deals with the wives of glass boaters, this component will attempt to introduce women to income generation activities that they can manage on their own thus contributing to their families' welfare.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will implement training activities targeting the glass boat association in order to enable it to manage a revolving fund used to improve beneficiaries' boats. This training will include the financial and the administrative aspects. It is hoped that this will build the association's capacity to manage its usual activities as well as projects of a larger size. Glass boater themselves will also benefit of the capacity building efforts, they will receive information that will make them more able to manage their business.

Project Results

-Insurance on the boat and passengers has become obligatory as a result of project efforts and contacts with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), which regulates glassboats functions, and the Aqaba Marine Tourism Coooperative, which is the umbrella for glassboaters.

-A specific form for the glassboat has been adopted and approved by the council of MInisters and announced in hte government official gazette, stating that boats which do not conform to the set form do not get the needed licence.
