The project will intends to address security and development of the ancestral domain of the indigenous Talaandig community by strengthening and promoting their participation in watershed and forest conservation and management.

The project shall adopt the integrated area development approach, reinforcing the role of tribal communities as resource managers.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Capability-building activities shall be conducted to further enhance and strengthen the traditional leadership and management capacities of the PTA leaders. Modules shall center primarily on providing the partner organizations with skills to secure, protect and manage their domain. Activities honing their skills in local governance to enable the organization to effectively and efficiently participate in the government's local special bodies will be conducted. It shall include a cross-site visit to other indigenous communities and areas implementing own development programs and projects and are actively involved in local and environmental governance participation. Conduct of traings on the following modules: 1. Para-Legal Training; 2. Local Government Cose; 3. Agro-Forest Project Planning and Management; 4. International Environmental Laws; 5. Community-Based Radio/Media Advocacy 6. Organizational Development and Project Management

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The impact or effect is an empowered community having improvement in their lives and rights whether economically, socially and culturally. This will further harness the spirit of voluntarism and cooperativism among members. This will likewise strengthen positive cultural traditions and values for respect to the environment they considered sacred and therefore protected and not abused. The protection of the watershed will also have a big impact to the farmworkers in the towns of Pangantucan, Kalilangan, Damulog, and Carmen, North Cotabato.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project area is the home of the Tala-andig people (from the myth of Tala-andig) . The Tala-andig's ancestral domain cradles not only the indigenous cultures but also the various types of flora and fauna. Their mountain are the natural habitat of diverse animal, birds, insects, tree and plant species including herbal plants. The other indigenous peoples who are working in the areas are: Nagkahiusang Kahugpuang ng mga Manobo ug Talaandig; and the Nagkahiusang Tribung Lumad sa Bukidnon.

Notable Community Participation

The project shall include activities/mechanisms on how the project will build/develop the capability of the PO to reach out to other areas/other IPs groups within the area or immediate areas outside the project site. Tribal guards are formed and assigned to conduct roving operations and arrests of illegal loggers. They will regulate entry into identified reserved sites; protected areas; sacred/burial grounds and communal forest areas. They will also establish fire breaks; prevent the cutting of trees particularly along and near water sources and monitor the opening of new kaingins. With the use of hand-held radios they can now immediately contact and coordinate with the local DENR, radio stations and Philippine National Police (PNP).

Gender Focus

The women and childred is responsible for the plotting of wildlings and seedlings in plastic bags, aside from establishing a herbal garden. The committees shall also take turns in a weekly fashio in providing assistance to nursery caretakers particularly in weeding, watering, transplanting, and overall maintenance.

Project Results

The Talaandig community is looking forward to empowered lives, basically having the spirit of volunteerism and cooperativism among members. They belive this is the foundation of a strong positive cultural tradition and values, most importantly the respect for the environment which the community where able to achieved thru this project.

The community already gained training and skills on ancestral domain development; project management; organizational development and participation in local governance.

A comprehensive Ancestral Domain Sustainable Development and Protection Plan were developed, adopted, and implemented.

A case study on Traditional Knowledge on Indigenous Systems were documented and produced.

The watershed has been protected.

Community linkages were built to consolidate development efforts.
