Habitat protection and rehabilitation of the medicinal plant Gentiana lutea
Habitat protection and rehabilitation of the medicinal plant Gentiana lutea
Gentiana lutea is a herbaceous perennial and grows in mountainous regions, on meadows and open slopes from the Pyrenees to the Carpathian mountains, and to north and west Anatolia. The dried roots and the rhizome of the gentian yield bitter substances which stimulate the digestive system and are used in a great variety of phytomedicines and other herbal preparations. In Albania and in many other countries a general decline in population size owing to commercial exploitation has led to Red Data Book listings. At European level, it is listed on Annex V(b) of the "Habitats Directive", and on Annex D of Council Regulation (EC) No. 338/97.

The project will take place in the deep mountainous areas of Albania, such as Fushe Arrez and Shishtavec of Kukes. The main objective of the project is the rehabilitation of damaged habitats of Gentiana lutea. The project will consist in cultivation of this species by local farmers and reintroduction of new plants in the natural environment. It is foreseen that 20 local families will benefit from this project. Materials with data specks on this species, its cultivation and commercial value will be prepared and distributed.
