Alternative Energy for Agro-product Development

Under the support of Operational Phase 2 , year-2, the foundation had implemented a climate change project with three villages in Chiangmai Province. The project demonstrated the use of renewable energy from solar and biomass as well as sustainable use of fire-woods in food and traditional medicine processing. The outcome, though not all successful, has led to the emergence of learning process, recognition of local knowledge, development of alternative energy consistent with local livelihood, production system , management of natural resources by CBOs as well as dialogues amongst community networks. As an organization long involving with grass root communities, the foundation has been playing a coordinating role for all these activities.

With the experience thus gained, the foundation together with its various network in upper northern region of Thailand has aimed to expand project location, apply holistic approach for development and development of alternative energy,

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Even though the grantee is a national NGO, it has been working closely in target areas for more than a cecade. Participation from target community has always been secured.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Target population is indigenous people since the project area is their motherland for generations.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The grantee is a comparatively tigh organization with several network in northern Thailand. Project activities encouraged public awareness in this region, so far.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The overall goal of the project is to try to revive agricultural, especially, paddy farming, occupation in the area.

Capacity - Building Component

There are capacity-building components, especially in energy, in proposed activities.

Gender Focus

Women have been encouraged and trained to manage the project hand-in -hand with men.

Project Results

Completion report was received on May 1 , 2005, summarizing the following outputs/results:

1. Reduction of expense on canned gas by Baht:250/production of traditional medicine (50 kg.of herbs)
2. Reduction of production times by 50 % ( five days to two days)
3. Evinced reduction of moisture of herbs and of related fungus
4. Reduction of fuels by 33 % with controllable heat flow and time for services
5. Obtaining by-products distilled solution for agricultural and household use
6. With maximum heating temperature of 65 C , production time being reduced at about 50 % ensuring
continuous supply
7. Reduction of expense by Baht: 750 / 1.5 tons of paddy
8. Evinced increase of capacity of 61 project members through actual putting into practice after
workshops, trainings and seminars

Note:

From May 2003 to June 2004, the project organized seven health forums / technical forums at various venues on traditional health and medicine and culture. The total number of attendants was estimated at 4,000 people.

Methods:

Collecting , processing , sensitizing data & information in the field and summarizing the result then putting for discussion among network members.

Impact:
1. 60 % of the target population from two networks in nine districts demonstrated increased capacity
on degraded situation of environment , especially on energy , and resorted to alternative
renewable energy (biomass from agro-waste)
2. The project provided opportunity for women/housewives to participate in development process.
Women?s role in development was also given importance.
3. Project activities were replicated in four locations in Chiangrai and Phrae Province
