Manure for Biogas Production
Target population are members of the Feed Producing Group ,one of several occupation groups under the Community Enterprise for Self-reliance of Ban Hong Ha. Mostly farmers, they are , especially experienced in agriculture such as hog rearing , fish breeding and community-based research. Concurrently, the group is conducting a research on financial viability in their own community.
Under current support from the Thai government, the group has aimed to produce feed at three tons per day. The process requires heat for keeping the ingredient at 10 % moisture content. The heat is from the most ready source i.e. canned natural gas. With such aim, it is calculated, the consumption of this fossil fuel would be of great quantity adding to the production cost and carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere as well.
With 140 hogs and other pre-existing facility in community and from other sources, the group will make use of the manure by turning into biogas and subsequently using this gas in the heating process. Besides, the left-over of the biogas process will be used to promote agricultural practice.
Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):
1.To make use of heat from biogas in feed producing process
2.To make use of left-over from biogas producing process as non-chemical fertilizer and soil conditioner
3.To reduce excessive manure run-off into natural water course
Activities to be carried out under project:
1.Building biogas producing facility in according to proven technology and detailed designed and putting to use the produced biogas in feed producing process
2.Producing & campaigning the use of manure , agricultural waste and compost in pellet form for fertilizer
3.Building capacity of communities on renewable energy application (solar and biomass)
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1.The target population is the primary beneficiary
2.The Mae Jo Tambol Administrative Organization is providing infrastructure in the target area
3.The local agricultural office is providing saplings and technical assistance on agricultural practice
4.The Ministry of Interior provides fund for equipment for producing feed
Anticipated results of project:
1.Emergence of biogas facility of 30 m3 capacity, supplying heat for drying feed of one ton/ day
2.Reduction of natural gas consumption in the feed producing process by 720 kg. equivalent to Baht: 12,000:/year
3.Decreased cost of chemical fertilizer by Baht: 100,000: / year and of hog raising by Baht: 228,000: / year
4.Odour pollution and water-related pollution are minimal.
5. Soil condition in the planting area is improved.
