Adaptation of Grybaulia fish ponds for birds protection and ornithological tourism
The ponds of Grybaulia fall into the category of key wetlands and shallow waters of Lithuania. There you could frequently see birds under global threat of extinction, such as white-tailed eagles (Haliaetus albicilla L.), crakes (Crex crex L.), ferruginous ducks (Aythya nyroca Gul.). The main objective of the project is to ensure better conditions for hatching, nutrition and rest of birds at the territory of approximately 200-250 hectares of abandoned pond.
Arranged biotechnical means in the nature will be envisioned for visitors, who will also be offered a possibility to see and get to know birds. Arrangement of parking lots, putting stands with information about birds, routes, and regulations on visiting of ponds are foreseen in the project.
This project could be seen as an economically attractive exemplary model, which proves that cooperation between local businessmen may contribute both to environmental protection and to local community.
