Conference about the environmental disaster in Coronie (TRI/03/02)
The Coronian Swamp is of inestimable value for Coronie, Suriname and the rest of the wold. The lack of freshwater in the world makes this source also interesting in order to pay special attention to, to this swamp. This swamp should be considered as a natural resource that can cause, like it has already proven, land reclaimed. At the looking for solutions one will have to look as well to the possibilities that the environment offers us already.

By decision of the Minister of Natural Resources of 25 March 2001, the coastal strip between the Coppename River and the canal of Burnside was declared regional management area. In this decision it is written among other things that protection of the above-mentioned is urgently necessary because of the increasing threats.

The polder draining system is now totally disrupted and neglected. The disruption is among other things the result of the ill-considered copying of developments or projects from other areas to Coronie at which the fact that there is a special wetland in Coronie was insufficiently or not taken into consideration. The new techniques that are being used at the cultivation of rice in the swamp area, have not had the results required up till now. And as a result of these techniques certain projects are not possible anymore because of the fact that swamp water in the coastal area is lacking and the ecosystem has changed because of this.
