Biodiversity Conservation of wide range reserve forest area of Khaprakhol Block of Bolangir District through strengthening of local institution building process and development of sustainable forest based livelihood with involvement of the community and SHGs.

The project aimed to attempt at the conservation of eco system and NTFP potential of Khaprakhol Block through involvement of local communities, government line department and PRI functionaries. It also initiated effort in the direction of sustainable forest based livelihoods of the local communities, which in turn contributed to the conservation of rich forest wealth in the region.

The project facilitated the development of NTFP & Medicinal plants based community level enterprises in order to secure sustainable livelihoods as well as conservation of eco system for forest dependent marginalized sections especially women. Ex-situ cultivation of medicinal plants was undertaken and the formulation of an integrated community based forest management plan with special emphasis on eco system was facilitated. Forest management groups (FMGs) were formed and existing community forest management efforts were strengthened through enhancement of their skill and capacities.

Gender Focus

The interest of the poorest groups in the project area especially women had been addressed through the strengthening of the Self Help Groups and the Forest Management Committees. Collectivization and institutionalization has increased the bargaining power of the people especially the women. Women based enterprise development integrated women into the mainstream production system, and consequently, women?s social status had gone up on a sustained basis.

Capacity - Building Component

The main component of the project was the strengthening and competence building of community based organization on sustainable development & resource management. Women Self Help Groups were formed and strengthened to undertake Non timber forest produce (NTFP) based enterprise and manage their own funds. The SHGs were trained as primary collectors of NTFPs.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project directly benefited about 300 households in 15 villages. The project?s target groups were primarily the marginalized forest dependent communities. The development of a cooperative controlled by the women SHG members had ensured sustainable harvesting practices and sustainability of the NTFP based enterprises. Different marketing networks had been explored so that the primary collectors could get profitable remuneration from the markets.

Notable Community Participation

The project strengthened the involvement of the local communities in the management and protection of forest areas. A collective approach and effort was adopted to mobilize community members. The forest network at the block level was strengthened to conserve the rich biodiversity of the area. The review and monitoring of the project also followed a community participatory approach.

Replication of project activities

with regard to the forest land act, the forest dwelling communities have been motivated to apply pata in project area. The demonstration field has influenced the Officials and the people who have developed two herbal gardens Telanpali GP

Project sustainability

women groups are capable to manage their proccessing unit and Business with their own resources Panchayat Raj institution (PRI's) members are sensitised on the issues and they are effectively contributing to the process. different committies are now able to manage the Equipment.

Project Results

? Two training programmes on herbal plantation were completed with 55 participants from 20 villages.
? Two trainings on Co-operative Act were organized at Harishankar Revenue IB with 53 Participants from 20 SHGs of 15 villages.
? Forty thousand seedlings of various herbal species were raised in five nurseries.
? Demonstration on 3 acres of land was developed and experiment of plantation was shown to the farmers.
? Two orientation trainings on Oil-seed processing were organized at Unanibahal with 30 SHG members from 15 SHGs of 15 villages.
? Total 15 oil processing machines were installed accruing benefits to about 300 women.
? Herbal plantation was completed in 8 school premises in Khaprakhol.
? Team of 3 members visited the Swaminathan Research Foundation, Jeypure to learn herbal plantation and bio diversity conservation.
? Bana Sarakhyana Samithi (VSS), Forest Protection Committees have been revived and 5 new VSSs were formed.
? Rules and regulation of JFM was set up and discussed in near about 20 villages.
? Community land plantation was completed in 15 villages in 12 Acs. Land and 30 varieties of herbal species were planted.
? 150 corporate houses were contacted for the marketing of herbal products and Neem oil was being sold at about USD5 by the villagers.
? Having seen the installation of hand-driven Oil-expeller machine for processing of oil-seed items by the SHGs in the project area, the volunteers of UNDP started doing the same work in the field.
? People were encouraged to take up similar imitative in the area and adopted plantation of herbal medicinal plants as a means of income generation.
? ORMAS -has distributed 50 oil expellers to women SHGs for processing NTFP items.
? Total 60,000 different varieties herbal species raised in 5 nursery and distributed to 8 School and to the people of project area and planned in the school premises, community?s land and in individual land.
? Community land plantation has been completed in 15 villages in 12 Acre land and 30 varieties of herbal species have been planted.
? 15 corporate houses have been contacted for the marketing of herbal products and oil seed items packing bottles.
? 2 day training on Regional Federation Building process was organized at Hari Shankar, 100 participants attended the program.
