La Plaine Hi Grade Pork Processing Project
Establishment of the MTPNP and subsequent declaration of the same as WHS severely restricted activities such as hunting of wildlife and harvesting of forest resources from the National Park. Stringent prevention of hunting sea turtles has also affected the La Plaine's community access to these resources. This created a demand for pork and smoke pork which was siezed upon by the La Plaine Hi Grade Development Group.
The LPHGDG consist of six members all of whom are women from the La Franchette hamlet of La Plaine. Some of them are members of the National Pig Producers Cooperative so in the event of over production there is already a guranteed market for the product.
In addition to providing a sustainable livelihood opportunity for the women, the project would achieve the overall objectives of reducing the need for illegal hunting of wildlife from the National Park and slaughtering of turtles on the beach at La Plaine.
To provide a livelihood alternative to the hunting of wild game in the WHS through adding value to women's group's current small-scale production by salting and smoking pork.
Some of the project goals include:
To rediscover, revive and strengthen the rich cultural heritage of the southeast communities of Dominica where eating of smoked meat is tradition.
To reduce the need for hunting of turtles.
To enable project participants to earn a sustainable income through environmentally friendly agricultural, agro-processing production.
To reduce the hunting and smoking of wild life in the MTPNP/WHS and environs by providing an alternative source of smoked meat.
Specific Activities:
purchase of piglets, purchase of feed, construction of smoke house, slaughter and sell prok and smoked pork. Use pig manure for organic farming
