Save and Regenerate the Environment.
Save and Regenerate the Environment.
Rationale for the project:
The main reason for undertaking this project was to stop soil degradation and erosion, thereby protecting the soil fertility by encouraging the farmers to give up shifting cultivation and adopt SALT (Sloping Agriculture Land Technology) on a wider scale, by rehabilitation of degrading sloping farmlands.
The main goal of the project was to stop shifting cultivation, charcoal production and lumbering which was extensively practiced by the people of the Chandel district, Manipur. The main thrust of the project was environment and soil protection by introducing SALT technology and Community Plantation Programme. Focus was also laid on income generation. The goal of BADOM was to set up Nodal site at Aigejang village and Chandel district where the VO sent its members, beneficiaries and organizers for implementation of SALT technology to bring about ecological balance and generate sustainable income for the poorest of the poor.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
SALT technology considerably reduced soil erosion, and its effects were felt in Assam and Bangladesh and even in the seacoasts, which had been badly affected by floods and siltation. Community plantation of trees affected the global weather and helped in reducing the greenhouse effect.
Replication of project activities
The SALT technology was very much useful to the farmers and it was effectively replicated in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Nagaland, which had similar environment, communities and cultures.
