A Community Endeavour for Bio-conservation and Employment Generation in Uttaranchal.

The project was undertaken to demonstrate, train and disseminate Hydra form brick technology in rural areas and minimize environmental problems in the project areas by utilizing industrial waste and by-products for application in housing and allied activities. This would be a source of eco-friendly and sustainable livelihood for the local people. A demonstration cum skill building center was setup in the project areas. They undertook to organize a familiarization course especially for the youth so that they could learn the technology better and faster.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Local women?s and youth from the surrounding villages will be mobilized into self help groups l and thrift and credit activities will be promoted. The groups will be linked with the banks and activities like bamboo based handicrafts, bio-dynamic composting and weaving.

Gender Focus

Periodic trainings and capacity building by SFCID to the women SHGs of rural and remote tribal areas has raised greater empowerment and addressed the strategic needs of the local women. women and youth trained and gainfully employed in nursery raising and Poly House management at the parks.

Planning non gef grant

Received the Development Marketplace 2005 Recognition Award to support the project titled " Conservation of local Himalayan bamboo through awareness raising, conservation demonstration and training in India" which was presented at the Development Marketplace held at the World Bank in Washington DC on May 24-25 2005. SFCID will receive an amount of USD 5,000 Awareness generation, establishing a Training Centre and training of artisans.

Policy Impact

SFCID has been recognized by many stakeholders as a transparent, local ly benefitting delivery institution. The SFCID made links with Bamboo Mission, Local Forest Department for establishing home garden nurseries in villages.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The BTP will be used to sensitize the local community and the tourists on climate change & Bio-diversity conservation. Community will be mobilized on issues of cleaner environment, waste management in trekking routes and ownership in mountain tourism activities.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The Indigenous peoples participation has a very good impact on the project as they participated in the training programs with their interest and they have shown a great interest in the meetings conducted by the community and were very active in all the times for the project development programs.

Capacity - Building Component

The self helps will be trained on making local handicrafts, nursery raising, vermicomposting and pisciculture. Rural youth will be trained in management and marketing and will be responsible for the day to day running of the Bio Tourism Park.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Two bio tourism parks will be established with communities? participation in the project area where eco tourism, adventure tourism and pilgrimage based activities will be promoted. Sustainable rural eco tours will be promote for income generation using local resources. Indigenous culture/ cuisines/traditional knowledge will be linked with tourism, local handicrafts and lesser known treks & destination around Bio Tourism Park will be promoted. Additionally, local artisans will be institutionalized into federations and will be trained as master trainers and enterprise establishemnt will be promoted. The products prepared by the groups will be sold through the BTP.

Project Results

A bio tourism park has been constructed with 5 Tourist Huts having basic amenities along with Green House/Poly house, Smoking chamber for ringal (hill bamboo) craft, NADEP/ vermicompost, fish pond and nursery of fruit/fodder/fiber plants. Identification of potential craft clusters has taken place and training imparted to 30 craftsmen on design diversification and value addition. A marketing outlet has been established in the BTP and mastercraftsmen identified for training of trainers. The artisans federation is managing the souvenir shop. 23 SHGs of rural tribal women formed. 15 unemployed youth trained and given gainful employment in Bio-Tourism Park (BTP). Large scale plantation of ringaal bamboo has been done on the hill slopes by school children and rural artisans are being encouraged to undertake hill bamboo nurseries. 50 women and youth trained and gainfully employed in nursery raising and Poly House. Around USD 1,500 of profit generated through the BTP. Around USD 99,000 raised as co-financing from community, private sector and the central and state government. Waste Management and environmental awareness of communities and tourists in the Bio Tourism Park (BTP). Ex-situ and in-situ conservation of 10 rare medicinal plants done in the Medicinal and Herbal Garden. Use of bio-dynamic compost introduced in 17 families. More than 400 trees planted along the slopes to increase green cover and reduce land slides. More than 200 trees planted in nearby forests and more than 340 local fruit, fodder, medicinal, ornamental plants and bamboo planted inside the BTP
