The results of the project surpassed expectations. Many of the local smallholders, once the ferrocement reservoirs were built on their properties, turned from conventional farming to organic farming. The ?Sun Nucleus? and the ?Water Nucleus? were successfully implemented. Innovative approaches in maintenance and recovery of water quality, as well as renewable energy use can be put into practice for regional sustainability. Erosion and loss of soil were the first problems local smallholders chose to attack once they decided to work toward sustainability. Community gardens irrigated by captured rainwater and definition of strategies for soil re-conditioning were the activities for that end. A solar dehydration unit was assembled for improvement and value added to the local products. There was some reluctance to the use of solar energy, given the previous conventional rural electrification of the area. A solar-powered water heater for showers was installed as an example. Through experimentation and observation, IPEC has managed to change many rooted beliefs in the communities which caused misuse of the environment?s resources. A responsible culture, however, takes deep changes in values to be effective. It is a long-term process, which IPEC has shown itself committed to continue. Using equioment built in the country proved itself to be a more worthwhile option, since the delay in the execution of the project was due to the importation of energy equipment. Training courses were offered, four ferrocement reservoirs were built for irrigation with the use of rainwater (capacity of 15.000 liters), implementation of gardens in these same properties, and implementation of swales were all activities that took place during this project.
