The following activities have been undertaken in the execution of this project, in the Mateiros Craftsmen/women and Rural Producers? Association: the first block of the association headquarters was built, with space for a handcrafts store, a kitchen and two bathrooms; the store was inaugurated; meetings and workshops were held to qualify the craftswomen for stock and sales control. In the Fazenda Nova Producers? Hope Association: Jatobá was collected, and 90 kilograms of flour was produced; the flour was sold and used in experimental baked goods such as cakes and bread; Pequi oil was extracted and sold; the legal situation of the association was regularized. In the Mumbuca Capim Dourado Association: there were changes in management; nine meetings were held to discuss regulations for capim dourado and to start the process of exporting the handcrafts; a cost evaluation workshop for exports was held. The activities in the three associations had organizational strengthening as the main objective. Commercialization was not yet achieved, but under way. The high potential for the activities was established, serving as encouragement for the communities. Numerous problems were faced, such as: disputes due to the board of directors in one of the association having members of the same family; low-quality handcrafts being brought to the shows and fairs due to friendship between the person responsible for quality control and some craftsmen/women; a lack of a vehicle enabling the coordinator to integrate the efforts and provide proper technical assistance for the three associations; the communities have had difficulties working collectively, due to a lack of consensus in the use of materials and resources; problems with the coordination; partnerships planned were not realized; the technical staff of the project cannot satisfy all the demands in the three associations; the project coordinator had to leave the Jalapão area in 2004 and has not yet returned. The project has, however, been contributing positively toward conservation of Cerrado biodiversity, with generation of income and a feasible alternative to the traditional farming.
