Women and Water: Keep the Cerrado Standing
Mulheres das Águas: o Cerrado de pé
Mulheres das Águas: o Cerrado de pé
Agroecologic use of native fruit species with economic value is the subject of the qualification courses to be offered to the smallholders, with special emphasis on the women, is the objective of this project. Agroforestry systems, culinary use of regional resources, and orchid growing are the activities to be covered. Value will also be added to the improved products, promoting income-generating activities and employment for the beneficiary community. Inserting native flora species in the agroforestry systems ensures that the economic use in the agricultural areas will attract native wild fauna. The techniques to be employed contribute toward keeping organic matter in the soil, favoring the processes of nutrient recycling. Thirty smallholders in the region will be trained to implement and manage agroforestry systems in six demonstrative areas with an area of half a hectare each, in the Jatobazinho community. They will then become replicator agents. Stakeholders will have information exchange stimulated among them by the itinerant meetings in the neighboring settlements. A meeting with the government, dissemination of project activities via radio and an evaluation workshop are also planned. A documentary will be produced about the activities proposed in this project.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
The members of the Women of the Waters NGO , during a workshop for training of its temporary directors, came up with the demand for this project. Since then, the University of Brasília, and CAMARÁ assisted in its development. These women will participate in the execution of the planned activities.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project will bring social and environmental benefits to the communities. The relationship between the community and the environment will improve, as they will use native Cerrado species. They will further help to conserve the quality of the soil and attract native fauna. These activities will generate income and employment, appreciation for local culture, appreciation of the role of women in the productive process, strengthening of the community associations and inter-institutional relations.
