According to the progress reports submitted so far, the Third Cerrado Peoples? Meeting and Fair was held in Goiânia, state of Goiás. The event gathered the most important organizations and experiences in sustainable development in the Cerrado to participate in debates and work groups, in addition to exposing and commercializing the products resulting from their experiences: foods, medicine, handcrafts, etc. The Minister of Environment was present at the opening of the event, declaring September 11th as the National Cerrado Day, and sign a document creating the Cerrado Workgroup, a multi-sector entity in the National Government in charge of developing a specific policy for the biome. Both gestures represent achievements resulting from the efforts of the Cerrado Network toward sensitizing the Ministry of Environment as to the importance of the Cerrado and the urgency for its conservation. The Network met on the following days to elect its representatives in the Cerrado Workgroup. The Network also met with the other representations in the Workgroup: indigenous populations, descendants of former slaves, smallholders. Recommendations for the progress of the Workgroup were drawn up by the representatives. Technical subsidies about the state of the art in Cerrado conservation were offered during the event ?Cerrado ? before it is too late?. The Workgroup was formally installed in Brasília. The project has thus fully achieved its purposes, surpassing expectations and hopes that the Network and Workgroup can continue to contribute toward the conservation and sustainable use of this threatened biome.
