Implementation of a Babassu (Orbygnia sp.) Oil Extraction Microplant at Esperantina, Piau
Implantação de uma Unidade de Beneficiamento do Coco Babaçu
A Babassu palmnut (Orbignya speciosa) processing unit will be implemented in a community where a group of woman crackers will manage the project. Four municipalities in the Lower Paranaíba Piauiense, state of Piauí, will benefit from this unit, involving approximately forty families from each municipality. Better exploitation of the economic potential present in this palmnut will increase the income and improve the quality of life for these women who identify themselves as Babassu palmnut crackers. The community will be sensitized about the need for this project, the area for implementation of the project will be prepared, markets for the production will be sought, and planning, monitoring and evaluation of the project will take place during the execution of the proposed activities.

Notable Community Participation
Female Babassu palmnut crackers in the municipalities of Esperantina and Joça Marques and their families will benefit from the implementation of this project, being responsible for its management.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Natural resources will be conserved, as well as the Babassu species. Trees will not be cut down, preserving the heart of palm intact, since the removal of this heart of palm kills the whole tree. The quality of life will be improved for the families involved directly and indirectly, with the higher income generated by the processing and improvement of the palmnuts. The food security of these communities will also be improved by complementing their diets with the products of the Babassu flesh, which is high in protein and serves as a meat substitute.
