Cerrado Flowers and Fruits in the Daily Life of the Xavante Kitchen
Flores e Frutos do Cerrado na Vida Diária e na Cozinha Xavante
Female production in plant nurseries and Cerrado fruit and flower orchards in strategic points in the indigenous villages in the Sangradouro lands will allow Xavantes to recover the degraded environment and invest in the conservation of local biodiversity. The recovery of traditional flower, fruit, vegetable, and palm collection and planting practices will in turn promote self-sustainability of the involved Xavante communities. Food security will also be improved, contributing toward the health of the community members, due to the high nutritional value of the native foods. The project will invest in the women?s abilities and knowledge of the Ró (Cerrado) as an important source of social well-being, political power and economic autonomy of the Xavantes. The Sangradouro Lands are located near Primavera do Leste, state of Mato Grosso, which is arguably the most threatened state in terms of Cerrado deforestation and conversion to large-scale farming.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Recovery of degraded areas, conservation of the local biodiversity, sustainable development of the involved communities, recovery of traditional planting and collection techniques, improved health, and empowerment of the women are social and environmental benefits sought by this project toward sustainability of the local livelihoods.
Notable Community Participation
The idea for this project rose out of a meeting for the start of activities in a different project, during which the women identified the need for recovery of their traditional diet. Elders consider the community members today obese due to the inadequate diet adopted from non-indigenous people. They are afflicted by diseases which previously did not exist in their midst. The demand for this project was therefore created by the women in the community.
