Development of Community Health & Environment

Of 1,771 families in a valley, mostly of farmers, the target location is situated in Mekhong sub-basin where eight tributaries constitute the ecology and supply water for livelihood. The farming practice of heavily applying chemical plant hormone, fertilizer and pesticides had,as revealed by Tambol Fundamental Public Health office, evidently affected bodily health as well as soil and water quality. The chemical residue runs off into the Kok River, the main tributary in the area, then to the Mekhong River.

As chemical use increases to ensure expected yield, most pests adapt and become immune requiring more and more chemical and incurring cost. The average income per day per head is Baht: 60.

Providing skill training on Integrated Pest Management, production of organic fertilizer and pesticide, putting what have been learnt into practice and promoting market for product would contribute to reversing degrading situation, both in term of environment and livelihood.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Community members and community schools in each location have been participating in each step of project formulation and proposed to actively administered as the project fares along.

Gender Focus

No specifin emphasis on gender role, but overall community members as well as youth group were encouraged to play a leading role.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Target population is indigenous people.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The proposed activities directly concern the sustainable livelihood of target population.

Capacity - Building Component

There are capacity-building components in the course of project, especially on production of organic fertilizer/pesticide, chemical-free agriculture, and monitor of water quality.

Project Results

Completion report was received on 13 July 2005 with the following outputs/results:

1. The 84 project members gaining insight and demonstrating increased capacity on
- production of organic compost, soap from herbs, drinks of medicinal value
- essence of Integrated Pest Management

2. Evinced reduction of chemical application in agricultural practices

3. Produced average 200 kg.of organic compost per persons per month, 500 ml. of multipurpose solution per family per month , with monthly additional income of Baht: 80/person

4. Production of following chemical-free product:
- additional 500 kg. of paddy/acre with respective additional income of Baht: 3,260/acre
-additional 2,964 kg. of vegetables/acre with respective additional income of Baht: 3,000-
5,000 per acre
- additional 50 kg. of fruit/tree with respective additional income of Baht: 200-500 /trees
5. Continuous compilation of water quality for reference and as reminders

Participatory Evaluation:

The evaluation was conducted in series of five events in January with the wrap-up one on 12 February 2005 at Baan (village) Pa Thorn , Mae Suay District , Chiangrai Province

Participants:

All project members from five communities, and Tambol Agricultural Officers in target and neighbouring tambol, Members of TAOS, Staff members of local public health and schools

Methods: Open meeting

Impact:

The evident impact was witnessed through active participation of the five communities in continuous production of organic compost reducing the rate of chemical application , through the increase of yield and decrease of production cost. Non-member , surrounding communities hinted their interest to become alternative member. Local administrative organization further provided financial support on equipment for palletizing compost powder and institutional support.

Future Plan:

The project planned the followings:

1. Production of organic compost for use and sale
2. Continuous growing of chemical-free paddy and vegetables
3. Dissemination activities to surrounding communities
4. Forging environmental networking such as Water Resource Protection Group and Peaceful and Healthy Communities Group
