Management of Water Hyacinth in Chae Creek
Originating in Thablarn National Park and a tributary of the Moon River, a major tributary of the Mekhong River, Chae Creek had ,for years, been supplying water for consumption for target population. However due to inappropriate management of irrigation system in the area 20 years ago, natural circulation of water downstream cannot be secured leading to the aggressive growth of unwanted plant, especially water hyacinth. In dry season, communities downstream have to build weirs to store water for use.
Adding to this degrading situation are the excessive chemical run-off from farming communities and community waste from the municipality which further degrade the quality of water in the creek before converging into the Moon River.
In an attempt to reduce this problem, leaders of affected communities continuously meet and discuss the approach through participatory method by thinking thoughts to turn crisis into opportunity, i.e, turning unwanted plant into compost and handicraft. As to the community waste water from the municipality, the solution would be of a longer term , more participatory and law enforcement.
Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):
1.To conserve and manage water resources in Chae Creek
2.To supplement income of target communities through producing organic compost and handicraft from unwanted plants
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Conducting training & study tours for target communities on the following subjects:
-plan for conservation of Chae Creek ( 50 community leaders)
-production of water hyacinth from handicraft ( 50 members from housewife group)
-production of bio-fertilizer ( 106 member from cash crop farmers group )
2. Putting into practice what are learnt from 1.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1.Thablarn National Park
2.Royal Irrigation Department
3.Tambol Administrative Organizations
4.Provincial Water Work Authority of Khornburi District
Anticipated results of project:
1.Emergence of Management Plan for Chae Creek
2.Production of about1,000 pieces of handicraft/month and average additional income of Baht: 2,000:/ month from respective sales
3.Production of bio-liquid ,as starting substance for bio-fertilizer, about 5,000 litres /month
4.Average additional income Baht: 2,500./month from selling bio-fertilizer
