Stakeholder Workshop for the Conservation of Milas Tuzla Wetland
Although Milas Tuzla Wetland is recognised as an Important Bird Area with respect to international criteria, the wetland does not have a formal protection status. One of the most important threats against the integrity of the area, is its popularity among tourism investors. Tourism development plans, that do not take conservation of the natural habitat into account, include the construction of a golf course and a fun park. Another threat is the illegal hunting.
The SGP Grant will be used to organise a workshop that aims to bring together a wide variety of interest groups ranging from representatives from nature conservation agencies, NGOs, local administration, tourism investors and the media, in an attempt to identify the best solution for the conservation of the wetland as an important biodiversity source, in a participatory manner.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
As the underlying reason for the need of conservation is that the area is under threat of human activities, whether legitimate or legal, the attempts to organise a meeting to identify the best alternatives to the protection of the area inevitably requires a significant level of participation. The participation cannot be limited to the local but people, but it should also include representatives of the relevant public institutions as well as the concerned NGOs.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The meeting will draw attention to the biological importance of the area regarding its functions and values.
