PV-Powered Pumping System for B'laan Communities and Watershed Management Enhancement

The project involves the installation of one (1) PV-powered system for each of the two (2) communities to supply potable water needs of the local residents (B'laans) and watershed improvement in El Nalam and Lam-afos covering at least 12 hectares.

The project sites are located within a critical watershed, The South Cotabato Mountain Range, (South Cotabato Mountain Range are listed under "VERY HIGH" category for biodiversity conservation according to the Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Priority-Setting Workshop) where a similar SGP-funded project: "Solar Powered Water Pumping System for Purok Takilay (OP-07.97-M).

The project is closely linked to building awareness and forging community actions towards addressing climate change and biodiversity conservation issues at the grassroots level.

In the project implementation, it shall build on the experiences and gains of the SGP-funded project, where the recognition of IKSPs and the B'laans struggle for productivity, improved health and basic right to ancestral domain proved to be the key success factor of the project.

Project Characteristics and Results

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Direct project partners are indigenous peoples (B'laans) where project implementation shall build on the recognition of IKSPs and the B'laans struggle for productivity, improved health and basic right to ancestral domain.

Capacity - Building Component

Strengthens the B'laan farmers organization and cooperation within the members.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The number of hours that would be saved from fetching water could now be devoted to production activities to augment food supply at the household level. Collective watershed rehabilitation work should spur an agricultural/agroforest enterprise mix that would structure an increase in forest agricultural products. In the long run, this mixed ecosystem rehabilitation process would not only regenerate the watershed sanctuaries but could create a micro-livelihood base that would enable improvement in the B'laan household economy, and the B'laan community in the larger scope.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project intends to deliver the potable water systems that will help ease the burden of water collection, especially by women and children. An adequate and accessible supply of potable water will also impact tremendously on health and sanitation in the area. A long-term desired impact is the improvement of the watershed. The community-based project aims to strengthen the cooperation within the members of the community. The environmental soundness of renewable energy to develop the water supply of the two areas and the rehabilitation of the watershed enclaves in the context of sustainable farming systems definitely supports the overall thrusts of environmental and biodiversity rehabilitation objectives.

Notable Community Participation

The project is a cooperative and community-based undertaking of KALUHAKU and the local POs (KALU and KAMLU) to be assisted by ASPDI and SIBAT. The technical assistance will be specifically provided by SIBAT.

Gender Focus

The project would directly benefit women and children by easing the burden of water collection, a task usually assigned to women and children.

Project Results

One of the initial output of the project is that the community were able to see and evaluate themselves that in the long run that this mixed ecosystem rehabilitation process will not only regenerate the watershed sanctuaries but could also create a micro livelihood base that would enable improvement in the B'laan household economy, and the B'laan community in the larger scope.

A watershed management plan has been development/used by all stakeholders.

Technical system and management training for the operation of the PV-powered pumping system were established and implemented.

The watershed area were planted with 50% fruit trees and 50% traditional hard wood.

Medicinal plants in backyards and farms have increased.

All households in the community have now access to the water system.
