Headwaters Enhancement Project
The project involves the enhancement, protection and conservation of the community watershed and traditional resources in Northern Sagada, Mountain Province. Project components include watershed protection and conservation (through establishment of nurseries using endemic tree species, forest fire protection), capacity-building and documentation of IKSPs.
The project site is located within the ancestral domain of Sagada community and headwaters of the Chico River Basin. It has diverse vegetation including mossy forest (that serves as a host to migratory birds from mainland Asia from September to January) natural old growth pine forest and woodlots owned by indigenous families.
In addition to conservation and protection goals, the project also aims to serve as a venue for elders to impart their knowledge and historical accounts on established traditional forest to younger generation, thereby preventing unnecessary land conversion in the future.

Project Characteristics and Results
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Direct project partners are upland farmers/IPs (Kankana-eys/Igorots). These communities had been and will be managing their resources within their ancestral domain territory as a distinct management unit.
Notable Community Participation
The Elementary level students will be planting within the site with the community for them to establish as their common effort either as a tree plantation or as a Hedge garden for sources of clones for the clonal nursery.
Highschool level classroom groups shall be provided with planting compartments in the community owned forest as their management area and laboratory.
Students from college and universities in the capital town of the province and the regional center in Baguio City will be organized as a distinct group. They will make a documentation on the activiies they will commit on for their involvement. As their own contribution as a group, they shall be provided with planting compartments in the community owned forest which they can schedule their field planting activities.
The DAP-AY who have traditional authority over the community owned forest shall maintain their authority as managers of their designated Saguday block.
