Co-Financing for Biodiversity Protection and Conservation thru Community and School-Based Education

The projecta aims to undertake capacity building of selected schools to systematically integrate environmental education in the curriculum of high schools and effectively institute sound ecological practices within the campuses and significantly collaborate with local communities and other partners in promoting biodiversity protection and conservation.

The project seeks to mainstream environmental educationby integrating it in the academic curriculum of 25 plot schools and by training administrators, faculty and community extension coordinators as trainer. These trainer may initiate the institutionalization of environmental projects and practices in their own schools, link with local communities to start biodiversity conservation and protection projects, and in the future provide training to other private and public schools.

This project is a co-financing among the British Embassy Small Grants Scheme (SGS), CANADA Fund and the GEF/RNE SGP, with the SGP funding the biodiversity conservation components.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Teachers guides and students handbooks/workbooks will be produced specifically for high school students to facilitate curriculum integration in major subject areas.

Gender Focus

The project links to schools and local communities for purposes of mutual learning and the establishment or enhancement of school-community projects on biodiversity conservation and protection.

Notable Community Participation

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The school-comunity partnerships will promote biodiversity protection and conservation ethics among the students, parents, educators and local community members. The academe with their respective local community organizations will form an effective regional community-based environmental basis thus intensifying cooperation to support biodiversity protection and conservation that would counterweight environmental degradation.

Policy Impact

Though school are the primary targets of the project, the idea that knowledge and practices learned will not stop at those directly part of the school community but will redound further to secondary targets such as parents and other members of the household, friends, neighbors and other members of the community. This will further boost the project's intent to reach to many people as possible using the CEAP network of schools and the schools' own network of influence.

Project Results

The lead schools will undertake trainings and other community-based activities will be undertaken by schools that will motivate the people to contribute to environmental protection and conservation. Because of this program, opportunities will be available to institutionalize the protection and conservation of biodiversity; hence they are expected to set effective environmental policies that necessitate clear ecological activity standards that are constantly enforced in the schools and the communities in their respective regions.
