East Kazakhstan possessing unique beauty and ecosystems variety, simultaneously is one of the most polluted regions of Kazakhstan. Annually, 3 tons of copper, more than 2 tons of cadmium and over 100 tons of zinc are poured out into the river. In this connection, the local population has serious problems with watering of the agricultural grounds, supply with pure potable water, cattle gazing, rest in the coastal zone and bathing in the rivers. Health of people of the villages located alongside the coast of the river Irtysh, is exposed to the big danger as the poisonous substances poured out by the large industrial enterprises into the river, seriously reduce suitability of water for household and economic needs of inhabitants. But the current situation is that participation of the local population in the problem solvement is minimal.
Project tasks: 1. To inform population of the area about the situation with water supply and water resources of the region. 2. To draw public and state departments attention to solution of the problems of household, industrial and agricultural pollution of the river Irtysh and its inflows. 3. To highlight the situation in mass media. 4. To make local NGOs more active in solution of environmental problems. 5. To promote development of a dialogue between state authorities, NGOs, local population in decision of environmental problems of the region.

A special rafting to protect the river Irtysh will be lead, posters and booklets with appeals to preservation of water resources of the region will be developed and distributed, releases of the ecological bulletin "The Rivers and Tops" with materials about environmental problems of the region will be widespread. NGOs representatives, ecologists, biologists, journalists, students, bards will take part in the rafting. The agenda of the rafting will include meetings with local people, local authorities in the villages on the way of the rafting; the ecological action " Pure coast " will be realised; concerts of songs will take place. For illumination of actions representatives of national and regional newspapers, radio and telechannels will be invited, by results of the rafting a photo-exhibition will be placed in the city library.
