Road to protect Irtysh river (Formation of ecological consciousness of the population in the issues of preservation of water resources of the river Irtysh and its inflows)
East Kazakhstan possessing unique beauty and ecosystems variety, simultaneously is one of the most polluted regions of Kazakhstan. Annually, 3 tons of copper, more than 2 tons of cadmium and over 100 tons of zinc are poured out into the river. In this connection, the local population has serious problems with watering of the agricultural grounds, supply with pure potable water, cattle gazing, rest in the coastal zone and bathing in the rivers. Health of people of the villages located alongside the coast of the river Irtysh, is exposed to the big danger as the poisonous substances poured out by the large industrial enterprises into the river, seriously reduce suitability of water for household and economic needs of inhabitants. But the current situation is that participation of the local population in the problem solvement is minimal.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
The project aims at strenthening cooperation between NGOs, factories/pollutors, the local comunity and the local authorities in protection of the Irtysh river against pollution. To reach this goal, a number of meetings will be arranged, ecological booklets, leaflets, and posters will be distributed, round tables with the representatives of the enterprises, local administration, and NGOs will be organized; a public ecological commission will be created to define and determine the most important ecological problems in the region; ecological activities near the river will promote conservation.
