Water desalinated by wind and sun (Demonstration of opportunities of integrated use of wind and solar energy in electric power generation to be used in artesian water desalination, heating (in winter time) and ventilation of industrial premises of desalination plant in Tokabai village, Aralsk district (Kyzyl-Orda Oblast).

The Aral Region is the area of environmental disaster induced by human beings and haphazard action plans thereof. The post-soviet policy of irrational and inconsistent utilization of Amudarya and Syrdarya River flows as well as the general water use practices pursued by the governments of the neighboring Central Asian countries in the watersheds have irreparably damaged not only the environment but adversely impacted the life of 3.5 million people living in the area. Degradation of environment has a great impact on human life and activities leading to the loss of livelihoods, ill health of local communities, loss of jobs, lack of drinking water in this arid zone, etc. Deficit of electric power (electricity is supplied between 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 only) and clean potable water have to be mentioned as the main problems that the rural communities face. Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Articles in local newspapers will be published; seminars and meetings with involvement of a wide audience will be carried out; booklet and brochure on results of the project will be issued, information campaign with active involvement of mass-media to propagation of large-scale use of renewed sources of energy among local population will be conducted, lectures at schools will be held, TV & radio programmes will be organized.

Project realization was done in close coordination with UNDP GEF full scale project on wind market development. All data collected within SGP project was transmitted to this big project

Taking into account that project providing people with fresh water, it will stimulate them to maintain equipment in proper manner. Also the special trainings were conducted and special staff was trained

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The Project contains a number of actions directed on expansion of access of the local community to modern technologies on use of free wind and a solar energy both for the purposes of artesian water desalination and for household use; and also for development of additional opportunities providing more comfortable conditions for healthy way of life. Capacity - Building Component

The local population gets access to new solar & wind use technologies. The project promotes and strengthens partnership between the local community, NGOs, local authorities and private sector. Training programme realization within the project will raise public awareness about alternatives use for economy purposes.

Notable Community Participation

The local population will get an opportunity to use the wind installations and solar panels for industrial needs, to preserve health and save the family budget. During the installation of the equipment skills and knowledge available at the local level will be widely used. Besides, during realization of the project modern knowledge regarding use of the energy saving nature protection technologies and traditional methods of rational nature use will be handed to local experts. Local experts and the local community will be actively involved into the project preparation, realization and monitoring

Gender Focus

women and men will participate in project realization on equal base and later will share project`s generated benefits.

Project Results

This project has demonstrated perspective for wind and solar energy use for remote place electrification and clean water supply. The project was presented to high country officials and there is a chance that it will be replicated within different state programs. 148 families benefited from SGP project realization
