Water desalinated by wind and sun (Demonstration of opportunities of integrated use of wind and solar energy in electric power generation to be used in artesian water desalination, heating (in winter time) and ventilation of industrial premises of desalination plant in Tokabai village, Aralsk district (Kyzyl-Orda Oblast).
The Aral Region is the area of environmental disaster induced by human beings and haphazard action plans thereof. The post-soviet policy of irrational and inconsistent utilization of Amudarya and Syrdarya River flows as well as the general water use practices pursued by the governments of the neighboring Central Asian countries in the watersheds have irreparably damaged not only the environment but adversely impacted the life of 3.5 million people living in the area. Degradation of environment has a great impact on human life and activities leading to the loss of livelihoods, ill health of local communities, loss of jobs, lack of drinking water in this arid zone, etc. Deficit of electric power (electricity is supplied between 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 only) and clean potable water have to be mentioned as the main problems that the rural communities face. With the shrinking resources of surface waters the main source is found in the ground and artesian waters (usually saline). The area is lacking an adequate water supply and desalination system. Even the limited amounts of water taken from the wells are not processed and are not usable for drinking.
There is an urgent need in the suitable (low-cost) and easy-to-maintain system of pumping facilities in the wells and artesian wells equipped with cleaning/desalination devices to meet the urgent needs of local people living in this region.
The project will enable to supply local communities in Tokabai village with potable water (10 l a day per capita). The water conversion station will be released from the centralized electric power supply, the consumption of organic fuel will be reduced for electric power generation for technical needs and industrial heating of the conversion facilities in Tokabai village compensated by electric power supply of the pumps, electrodialysis plant, aerogenerator heating units and solar panels.
Settlement of the installation will provide its steady independent complex electro supply and accumulate surplus of the electric energy during the day time to maintain trouble-free work of the equipment at night. During the project implementation the local people of Tokabaj village will be provided with a high quality freshened water. The experience of use of alternative energy sources to solve the problems of electro supply and water supply of the local population will be distributed among a wide audience for future replication.
Maintenance of the village with a pure potable water will promote reduction of deseases. Within the framework of the project the efforts of 2 programmes (GEF/SGP and the UNDP TTF) will be combined on the basis of a generality of the purposes and tasks and co-financing, and coordination of the activity to increase the efficiency of the project and to achieve a maximum positive
