Electrification of village Palumeu through application of micro hydropower works in the Panato creek
The overall objective of the project is to make a fundamental step towards generating and using of renewable energy for and in the village, creating thereby necessary conditions for improving the living standard of the village.
This objective will be reached through the implementation of a micro hydropower (MHP) station near the village, replacing the use of diesel generators and creating possibilities for new activities, developments and other spin-off effects.
Possible spin-off effects following from implementation of the MHP will regard the following sectors and activities:
- Employment resulting from new economical developments based on the availability of cheap energy.
- Medical care: better health care services, especially in the nocturnal hours in cases of, acute illness and birthing.
- Migration: clear and better prospects in future will impede or slow down the migration process to the capital
- Conservation of biodiversity, c.q. basin planning
- Sustainable agriculture: implementation and use of irrigation techniques for better agriculture in relation to the ongoing shifting cultivation
- The project, after its implementation, will certainly serve as a pilot for other villages in the hinterland of Suriname. It should be stressed that large-scale implementation of such project will become a milestone in poverty alleviation in the remote areas of Suriname, where large parts of the indigenous people are concentrated.
