Capacity - Building Component
There is no strongly pronounced component of development opportunities in the project, because the local population has been engaged in farming agriculture including cultivation of fruit trees since long time. The local implementing NGO had also experience in realizations of agricultural projects . The necessity to perform the project in the line with GEF/SGP requirements forces the NGO to conduct population interview, to know the public opinion, and carry out informational and propagandas campaigns. During realization of the project NGO becomes owner of 20 hectares land which will be planted and gardened plot in nearest future.
Project Results
Potential global benefits of the project
Thanks to the project the rehabilitation of walnut forest belt will be realized through making productive ravines, stony slopes and other non-used lands. Saplings of walnut (4000 pieces), plums (8000 pieces), a poplar (32000 pieces), a hawthorn (5000 pieces), a dog rose (10000 pieces) were planted on the 20 hectares and nursery for saplings was created on 1 hectare.
Link the practice of sustainable livelihoods to a GEF focal area
The aim of the project was rehabilitation of the fragments of natural and man-made walnut forest belt in the vicinity of Kerben village. About 70 % of population in Kerben lives below the breadline. People have to exploit natural resources without rehabilitation and reproduction. As a result, former wood and bush landscapes were completely destroyed and have been disappeared. There is no enough irrigation land for increasing population. Rehabilitation of walnut forest belt will be realized through making productive ravines, stony slopes and other non-used lands. Information campaign and training actions of the project are directed to show the local population the necessity to renew the natural resources, but not only consumption. All the more, that the matter is related to walnut forests - unique element not only of the Kyrgyzstan, but also of the world

Co-financing received
Co-financing from Public Association ?Altyn-Balalyk? in cash is $, in kind is $.
The main kinds of co-finance were labor on saplings planting and labor of local forestry specialist which helped to project with consultations. Contribution of local authority (allocating plot) is explained by interesting in increasing rent payment for plot which will in the future not waste land but forestry territory.
Replication in other communities or regions
This project is appropriate for replicating in analogous geographic conditions countries but for it necessary to solve the plantings protection problem. There are no plans on up-scaling the project to a medium-sized GEF.
Links between this project and the overall GEF
Links between this project and the overall GEF follows from public awareness on global environment problems, their direct involvement to the endemic plantings protection and attempts to introduce new sustainable using of natural sources in compeer with primitive cattle-breeding.
Influence on government policy
