Rehabilitation of pistachio and almond bushs in adyr zone of Southern Kyrgyzstan
Rehabilitation of pistachio and almond bushs in adyr zone of Southern Kyrgyzstan
The true pistachio (Pistacia vera) is unique nut fruit species which successfully grows and fructifies in a belt of foothill deserts and dry steppes. There are 23,0 thousand hectares (19,5 thousand hectares are natural; 3,5 thousand hectares are planted by man) pistachio in Kyrgyzstan.
The bukhara almond (Amugdalus bucharica) is a nut fruit culture which may grow on the dry (not irrigated) grounds where annual precipitation is less than 200 mm. The pistachio and almonds are the basic wood species of pistachio forests. The purpose of the project is rehabilitation of fragments of a pistachio forest belt in the vicinities of Suluctu town. At the same time the problem of stabilization of landslide prone is going to be solved. Landslide risk is very high in Suluctu town. It is supposed that Vavilov almonds (Amugdalus Vavilîvii) and spindle trees (evonymus koopmanii Gauche), included in the Red book of Kyrgyzstan will be planted later in the plantation.

The basic components of the project are:
- A protection of 30 hectares in the slope plot, before used for pasture and growing grain crops.
- Planting a pistachio (8250 saplings) and almonds (7500 saplings).
- Training the population to look after saplings
- Information and propaganda campaign.
