Seed production of drought resistant fodder
Mongolia is a dry country. This natural dryness has been affected by strong climate change effects over the last 10-15 years in Mongolia and as a result land, specially pastureland is rapidly being degraded or deteriorated. Grassland becomes scarce/poor year by year. There is an urgent need to improve grass conditions. One solution to this could be cultivation of drought resistant grass. The project attempts to produce seeds of a drought resistant grass which can be used as fodder for domestic animals as well as to combat desertification and overgrazing of pastureland. The project provides fencing materials for 3 ha area and some seeds to plant them in order to produce more seeds to plant them in other/surrounding places to herd livestock in a small fenced area on a rotational basis to reduce or aviod pastureland degradation. A couple of local people + Mrs. Erdenechimeg,a scientist from Animal Husbandry Institute are working on the project. The project is located in about 90 km in the north of Ulaanbaatar, near Batsumber village. If results come positive, then there will be a great movement towards improvement of pastureland and contribution to a widely discussed shift to a stationed animal husbandry practice.
