? Rhino Fund Uganda (RFU), along with its many sponsors and supporters, successfully reintroduced the white rhino back into Uganda in March 2005.
? RFU has established species as close as possible to that which were originally found in the area because it is essential for the future of rhinos in Uganda to be in a large sanctuary, like Ziwa Ranch, instead of a zoo, as findings show that breeding is incredibly difficult in captivity. Therefore, this sanctuary provides the rhinos with a habitat similar to their natural wild habitat to live and breed in, with the additional factor of safety - from poachers for their horns, and developers for their habitat ? added on.
? The establishment of the sanctuary has taken much time and effort from RFU and its many supporters. A 2-meter high electric fence secures the 7000 ha sanctuary. Alternative energy is provided for this system, through the installation of environmentally friendly solar equipment.

? Bomas, which are the enclosures where the rhinos remained initially for their quarantine period, were erected. Rangers have been trained in installation of the solar and fence equipment, anti-poaching and rhino tracking techniques.

? The RFU have taken steps to ensure that the local community is involved in the project. The education team of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has been visiting schools and communities in the area to raise the necessary awareness to ensure that this rhino conservation programme is understood and successful. Now, community members have started to develop small businesses, such as stalls selling hand made local crafts and sodas in preparation for visitors to the sanctuary.

? The sanctuary has established a visitors centre in order to provide visitors with information, and will be open soon ready to receive school groups and tourists. Being on the tourist-route between Kampala and Murchison Falls, means that the sanctuary can expect many visitors. This is beneficial for the wildlife and biodiversity conservation nationally and internationally, but also means that the local community and national economy will benefit through the increased tourism.

? The first four white rhinos set to live in the sanctuary and be part of the breeding programme are from Solio Ranch Kenya. The capture operation took place in February 2005 and for the six weeks prior to their journey to Uganda, the rhinos were living in a boma at Solio Ranch. They were fed in the same crates that were used for the transportation to Uganda, in order to minimise their stress during the 20-hour long journey.

? These four rhinos are the first of many more of the species to return to Uganda and procedures being geared up to secure further rhinos for the sanctuary. Discussions are in progress with The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe, for the translocation of Sherrino and Kabira, the rhinos that were brought to the education centre during the first phase of the project two years ago and are now ready for breeding.

? However, the eventual goal of Rhino Fund, is to relocate the rhinos to protected areas in their original habitat, such as Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley National Parks ? and this is the day Uganda looks forward to.
