Tsakaling Forest & Water Catchment Conservation Project implemented by the Tsakaling Village Committee (TVC) in Mongar Dzongkhag to build capacity of the Tsakaling Community Primary School and the Community Lhakhangs.

The three catchment areas of Thowangchu, Lamchutor and Gangkalamjug in Tsakaling village are at risk of drying up due to human activities as they are not currently not protected. Therefore the Tsakaling Village Committee would like to protect these catchment areas which would not only benefit the local community but also would conserve the biodiversity of these areas.

The objective of the project is to conserve the three catchment areas, install fuel efficient stoves to reduce fire wood consumption and increase the forest cover locally.

As per the progress report of the project, 4,859 numbers of tree saplings have been planted of various species. GEF/SGP Office has asked them to provide the exact area covered by plantation.

Local people

Capacity - Building Component

The conservation awareness component of the project will educate the local people on importance of conserving the local environment and improve their capacity to do so.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The local community have already been aware about the local environment measures to improve thier knowleged and livelihood through lessons learnt from other projects. The Pang Community aims to promote public awareness further through this project and how this would contribute the global environment by acting locally.

Notable Community Participation

The main aim and objective of the project is to build a relationship between the people and their environment. The community will contribute free labor by participating in implementation of project activities. Local communities would also be involved in monitoring and evaluating the project activities.

Gender Focus

There gender balance in this project as both men and women are expected to participate in the project activities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Through this project the Pang Communities hopes to enhance their sustainable livelihoods in the near future.

Project Results

Plantations:
1. 700 hard-shelled walnut planted in the school below academic hall as per the Dzongkhag Forest Sector;
2. 100 soft-shelled walnut planted around the school and;
3. 70 charmp (local name) saplings planted;

4. Three Watercatchment areas have been conserved:
Thowang Chu, Lamchutor and Gangkhar Lamichu.

Around the catchment areas, 5300 plants have been planted namely hard-shelled walnuts and of native species.

5. One set each of Fuel efficient stoves have been installed in three lhakhangs - Tormashong, Thorshong Goenpa Gomdey and Takhambi Gomdey.

6. Environmental Education Workshop was conducted. TVC also conducted Art and Craft Competition in the school.

Positive outcomes:
1. Water catchment areas fenced and protected;
2. lots of greenery around the school through plantation activities and also increased plantation in the catchment areas;
3. Fuel efficient stoves installed in the 3 community lhakhangs;
4. Local residents and students are aware about the importance of biodiversity conservation and its impact on the local environment.

Additional work activity has been taken up by the Tsakaling Village Committee with advice from the Dzongkhag Forest Sector, i.e. to protect the Manbar Chu Toeg catchment's areas.

Negative aspect:
1. By protecting the water catchment areas, it is not known that the volume of drinking water has been increased or not;
2. No data available in the reduction of firewood after the installation of improved stoves;
3. No data available as to how many area has been covered by plantation in the catchment areas.

TVC have sent revised workplan to carry on with the plantation and fencing activity on Menbar Water catchments area.
