Community-based Initiative to Energy Conservation in Merak & Sakten in Trashigang Dzongkhag to use fuel efficiency improved stoves in order to reduce the large consumption of fuel wood and thereby save local forest from depletion.
The project aims to remove barriers to energy conservation and energy efficiency and the OP5 objective to reduce the risk of climate change by reducing net green house gases emissions. The project will also promotes sustainable use and management of forests and forested areas at risk. This project is also in line with the guiding philosophies of GEF/SGP to reach marginal populations and isolated communities, where there is no other donors or NGO at present.

The number of stoves supplied to Merak and Sakten were done in four phases. 634 households have been supplies with improved stoves which also includes religious institutes like Lhakhangs and Gomdeys.

Initially when the project was approved, it was aimed for using the local materials improvised stoves but, in practice it was not feasible to built in two or more stoves in the same households, occupied by two different sects of people due to the type of housing constructions. Therefore, the project grantees decided to go for fabricated iron-cast stoves.

Since there was a change in the qualitty and pattern of the stoves, the project budget was just enough for procurememnt, transportation and installation of the stoves.
