Environment and Socio-economic Enhancement in Twal al Janoubi

Over the coming two years, That An Nitaqayn Women Charity Society and the local community of Twal Al Janoubi/ Deir Alla district east Jordan Valley will be implementing this project which will contribute to the sound integrated management of natural resources in the Jordan Valley in order to protect the fragile biodiversity of the Valley?s unique ecosystem. Local community members will be involved in the micro-management of their resources, diversifying and enhancing their means of livelihood. The project will support small income-generating activities at the household level, such as organic agriculture, bee-keeping, home gardens and poultry and livestock raising in addition to public awareness and training related to project activities. Capacity building was provided to the NGO and the local community of Twal Al Janoubi by the Canadian Company ?Komex International? over the past two years.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Community mobilization has started a couple of years back, leading to the formation of a local committee that included representatives form the CBO, the municipality of Twal Al Janoubi and other partners, including technical assistance. Community participation was very effective in need identification, planning and designing of the project and will continue through implementation.

Gender Focus

The CBO is a women organization, though a couple of men do participate effectively in the local committee. Priority will be given to women when selecting beneficiaries of the revolving fund and special attention will be given to insure women participation and capacity building.

Capacity - Building Component

The CBO's capacities were strengthened substantially though a training program over the past two years, which included training in financial, management, environmental, social and health matters. Both members of the CBO and the local community were part of this training. It is hoped now that this project will continue this process of capacity building and will enhance it by providing the CBO with some equipment that will enable it to interact with other communities, such as computer and internet access, a telephone and a fax machine, in addition to further training in proejct management with special focus on monitoring and evaluation.

Project sustainability

The enhanced skills and capacities of the women society and the selected CBOs will contribute to the sustainability of best practices and management of natural resources. Furthermore, the fund - which will be secured through GEF - SGP will contribute to improving the environmental and livelihood conditions in the local community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The major part of project activities will be managed through a revolving fund mechanism that would enable local community to implement small income-generating activities at the household level. These activities will enhance the community's sustainable livelihoods, since the repayments of loans will be used to support other income-generating activities by the communities.

Policy Influence

The project focuses on influencing the replication and expansion of sound management practices of natural resources in the Jordan Valley in order to protect the fragile biodiversity of this unique watershed of international importance. It will do so empowering local community organizations operating in the valley with a special focus on Deir Alla District. Its primary objectives are the following: - To enhance the capacity of Dhat Al-Netakeen society, so they become able to implement and mange the project activities - To build the capacities of local CBOs in the project area to enable them to better mange their resources - To assist a selected number of CBOs in applying for funding from SGP to enable them to implement community projects that aim at improving the environmental and socio- economic conditions in the Valley

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project includes a special component on public awareness that will target local community members including school kids, women and youth of the town and its surrounding area.

Project Results

Intended Results are the following:

- Twenty NGOs and CBOs are targeted and introduced to the concept of sustainable natural resource management and sustainable livelihood strategies.

- The training of these twenty NGOs on projects planning and management.

- The development and submission of eight to ten proposal to the SGP for funding

- The replication and expansion of sustainable natural resources management at the community level in Deir Alla District and in the Valley

- The enhancement of Dhat al-Netakeein's capacity to enhance, plan and implement similar projects improving their outreach in the community and enabling them to act on behalf of the SGP in assisting approved projects in their areas (to act as SGP focal point in Deir Alla).
