Awareness Raising, Capacity Building and Information Exchange for SGP Grantees GEFSGP STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOPS

This project seeks to intensify awareness raising on the GEFSGP focal areas together with the new operational programmes and their links to sustainable livelihoods. The project also focuses on capacity building of beneficiaries' understanding of the technical issues and pointers under GEFSGP, the area of reporting, funds management and resource mobilization for non-gefable areas.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

Some of the participants who attend the workshops are from government departments starting from the local to national level. These are also the key people in policy making and a thorough understanding of SGP work has helped to influence policy especially the Environment Management Act (EMA).

Capacity - Building Component

The focus of this project is on capacity building of SGP grantees in the following areas:- - Raising awareness of SGP grantees and partners on GEFSGP focal areas and new operational programmes - Strengthen beneficiaries understanding of the technical issues and pointers under GEFSGP and how to carry out baselines useful for establishing benchmarks and indicators. - Training on participatory methodologies - Training on funds management and reporting - Training on resource mobilization strategies

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The key stakeholders are the beneficiary groups which have been funded by SGP. These groups consist of indigenous people drawn from different areas nation-wide. These workshops will be a useful opportunity for networking and cross-fertilization of ideas.

Gender Focus

The projects will have a considerable representation of both men and women who are involved in implementing SGP projects. However, more women will attend since in most of the projects, women constitute 75 - 80% of the membership.

Notable Community Participation

These awareness raising and capacity building workshops focus on strengthening SGP grantees and partners to effectively implement their programmes and have a clear understanding of the focal areas, the global environmental benefits and how to document lessons learnt useful for replication and scaling up. the key actors are the communities who will receive technical guidance and assistance from the resource people and from SGP.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

These workshops will provide a platform for different resource people in the areas of biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation and international waters to raise awareness on the global environment. this critical mass of the community representatives will also have the task to disseminate this information and also raise this awareness in their respective groups.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Through these training workshops, the project beneficiaries will be capacitated on how they link their activities with sustainable livelihoods to enhance project sustainability.

Project Results

1. Awareness Raising and capacity building workshops
A total of 4 workshops were held in different areas that include two in Harare, One in Bulawayo, and one in Mutare
2. Inter Group exchange visits
A total of two exchange visits were carried out. Those who attended the workshop in Bulawayo visited the Insiza Biogas and wood saving stoves project in Sanali. on the other hand , those who attended the workshop in Mutare visited Serengeti Project in Rusape.
3. Development of an electronic template for financial reporting
A generic format for financial reporting was developed in NY and it is part of the progress report outline to facilitate grantees in reporting and accounting for their funds. the reporting fromats were shared with all participants during the workshop
4. Development of information materials by grantees
A presentation on development of information materials in the form of bronchures, pamphlets and fliers was done. Each of the grantees was tasked to revise their budgets to ensure that the areaof documentation was budgeted for.
5. Follow up projects and evaluation
There is a need to follow up projects experiencing difficulties and to do evaluations of completed projects.
