Application of Semi Natural Butterfly A Farming by Local Community Living around Bantimurung National Park, South Sulawesi
Project development Goal :
To conserve butterfly population in Bantimurung National Park and its vicinity through a semi natural butterfly farming among butterfly traders.
Project Objectives :
1. To encourage change of attitude and paradigm of villagers from traditional hunter to become breeders/grower and applying sustainable harvest concept,
2. To improve villagers knowledge and skill on butterfly habitat management in sustainable manner through a semi natural butterfly farming (captive breeding),
3. To increase income among local butterfly farmers and traders through a model of semi natural butterfly farming
4. To develop management information system in order to support campaign program, assist in decision making process, and develop marketing network.
Expected output :
1. A model of habitat management and a semi natural butterfly farming (captive breeding).
2. Empowered community institution on conservation management.
3. Established local agreements related to conservation management of Bantimurung butterflies.
4. Established participatory monitoring system.
5. Established sustainable harvest concept to ensure healthy wild population.
6. A model of butterfly eco-trade.
7. Established management information system to support awareness program through production of education material and outreach program.
Activities to be conducted :
1. Consultation and coordination; incl. preparation information kit material, office visits, and kampung meeting (namely Tudang Sipulung)
2. Management of semi natural butterfly farming (captive breeding); Conducting participatory mapping technique to design area for habitat enrichment and to develop farming facility, improving skills for farm management, develop participatory monitoring and stock assessment and produce a manual handbook
3. Butterfly farming business development; study (review) of product and market, develop a business plan, an agreed sharing of benefit mechanism, produce manual on product processing (from harvesting until packaging and shipping), network development for marketing (incl. produce media promo, spread link with collector and farmer via internet (e-mail) and planning to develop a website and e-farmer.
4. Management Information System; develop database system and repository data in supporting on analysis of monitoring and stock assessment results, assisting in decision making process of quotas, policy improvement, produce media outreach and campaign.
5. Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting; Monitoring and evaluation will be conducted periodically and in participatory manner whereas involving the community representative, NGO?s, and GEF/SGP officers as facilitator.
