Cutting Demand on Endangered Turtle in Bali as a Way to Conserve Aru Ecosystem
Development goal of the integrated project :
The emergence of Government Policy, law enforcement as well as community?s support (especially in Bali), which is needed to conserve the wellbeing of endangered turtle.
The integrated and comprehensive project will be conducted by consortium of PPLH Bali, WWF Wallacea and KPSHK, where every institution holds its own part and responsibility, and will act complementary each other. GEF/SGP supports the activities, mostly conducted by PPLH Bali in the field of promotion and raising public awareness.
Project objectives:
1. To enhance the emergence of government policy which favors to the turtle conservation efforts
2. To increase the understanding of turtle meat consumers / turtle collectors on the importance of conservation
3. To increase and empower the community in monitoring the usage / exploitation quota of the turtle, in order to avoid law abusing
Activities to be carried out under the project :
In order to achieve objective 1, the activities will be :
1. Identification of the meaningful of turtle, especially related to the religion in Bali
2. Policy dialogue
3. Compilation of local government policy?s draft
4. Dialogue with Local People Consultative Assembly
5. Socialization of the local government policy?s draft
In order to achieve objective 2, the activities will be :
1. Interactive dialogue in news media (radio)
2. Campaign in printed news media
3. Campaign in news media (radio)
4. Production and dissemination of poster and brochure
5. Visits to schools
6. Informal discussions with village leaders
7. Campaign through traditional art performance
8. Meeting with business people, especially related to supermarkets
In order to achieve objective 3, the activities will be :
1. Identification and strengthening community organization
2. Training on participatory investigation
3. Training on investigation report compilation
4. Press release to news media
5. Report to Local People Consultative Assembly
Other activities :
1. Monitoring : internal, external
2. Evaluation
3. Reporting
Anticipated result of project :
1. The emergence of favorable government policy with regard to conservation of turtle and ecosystem as well
2. The emergence of people?s awareness, which stimulates to decreasing demand on turtle (meats, souvenirs etc.)
3. The strong and empowered community organization, which able to monitor turtle usage quota, in order to avoid law abuse.
