Legislators' Workshop on Non-motorized sustainable transport for Rural areas.

At the GEF, non-motorized transport is a key component under climate change focal area. It is facilitated through Operational Programme No. 11, Promoting Environmetally Sustainable Development. GEF observes that transport sector is significant in terms of production of greenhouse gases (GHS). GHS emissions from the transport sector are expected to grow inthe coming few years from 5% to 30%. This Workshop was organized for Members of Parliament and policy makers with a view to sensitizing them about the importance of non-motorized transport in improving rural mobility and reducing pollution levels.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

All projects to be established after the awareness raising workshops will be based in rural areas where indigenous people live.

Capacity - Building Component

Initially, 296 legislators and policy makers will be enlightened on non motorized intermediate transport modes. Through these legislators, about 30,000 people will be sensitized on the technology.

Notable Community Participation

Primary target group is 296 Members of Parliament and policy makers. The secondary target group involves 30,000 people country wide. These will be drawn from the community level and will participate in awareness raising workshops.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Project aims at reducing GHG through wide adoption of non-motorized transport systems. Promoting public awareness on reduction of GHG is linked to conservation of Global environment.

Policy Impact

Workshop sought to influence a pocity on non motorized transport by sensitizing members of parliament to appreciate the effectiveness and importance of non motorized transport modes.
